johnnycake Goats rut in November +/- a week. There will always be some pre rut posturing stuff, just like you see with deer/elk, but that doesn't mean they are actively breeding.

There may be a billy or two in a nanny group in September, but they will typically be a younger billy 1-4 years old. Bachelor groups of billies will usually be found within a few miles of nanny/nursery herds. It is pretty common to see pairs of billies, where one of the billies is quite a bit older than the other.

As for "where," goats will be where goats will be. Billies, nannies, and kids will all be in any of the same places at the same or different times. But they generally don't have a massive "home range" most of the year. That changes when billies go into true full rutting behavior, when they will just start cruising miles and miles everyday, rarely staying still.

DallanC My wife shot her billy on the early Sept hunt... and it and another nice billy were showing rutting behavior and grouped up with a bunch of nannys.

Don't go by what ya read.

KineKilla I too have a goat permit and have never hunted them.

From what I've seen, yes the Billies are in small bachelor groups or solo this time of year. I'd expect them to start coming together mid-October or so.

I read that the rut wasn't until late October or November which would make sense. Because of where these things live, giving birth later in the spring would ensure higher survival rates.

They share the same environment and move around quite a bit but in the same "general" area. A place that has a billy standing in it today may be totally empty or full of kids and nannies the next day.

Good luck on your hunt!

Mountain goat questions

I have a mountain goat tag!...and like most people have never hunted them before haha.

Questions for y'all :

1. When do the Billies start hanging out with the Nannies?
2. The ol' internet says the Rut is in October-ish . if I see a group of Nannies and kids in early September should I assume there's not any Billies in the group?
3. They say that the billy will hangout by itself or maybe in up to a group of 2-3 any truth to these things?
4. Is there any way of differentiating a spot that should hold billies vs nannies or is it just one of those things where "they are where you find them"?
