Skyline Drive-Chernobyl Bash

Postby cazmataz » Jul 28, '10, 1:37

I fished some lakes up on the Skyline Drive on Monday. A friend and I dropped our sleeping bags next to the lake on Sunday Night and woke up to fish splashes about 6 am. It was tough fishing in the pontoon boats from 6:30 to 8:30. Those tigers wouldn't take any flies. I tried them all. Then I tied on a Chernobyl Ant and it was on. The day turned into one of those magical days where fish are ferociously attacking flies. We caught between 30-35 fish, all tigers between 16-19 inches. We fished a couple of other lakes with similar results. Great time.

Sounds like a ton of fun, congrats cazmataz. I was up there last weekend and tried a fly and bubble with every fly I had, with no success. I didn't ever break out the fly rod. Were you using floating or sinking line? Thanks for your help!!

Those tigers up there are weird. They won't touch a perfectly presented size 18 parachute small dry, but will absolutely crush a sze 6 hopper litterally drug on top behind you!

Runs almost 100 miles across the backbone of the Mantis from just above Indianola to Salina Canyon. There are two or three lakes and streams along it.

You don't catch every fish with a black maribou jig? Aw Dave.... the pedestal I had you on just got a very serious crack in the supports. :( Just kidding man.

Orvis will be glad to hear the "drag a hopper" suggestion for tigers.... the trip south was a little frustrating for him sometimes I think because of the stubborn fish. 8)

I was using floating line out of a pontoon boat. We also caught them from shore with hoppers and renegades. It was all about getting the drift right. If there was any kind of drag they wouldn't touch it.

Well it's nice to see that you figured out the formula for that day. Glad you hooked up.

On spinning gear, a gold Kastmaster was the ticket for me out there, but only if I jerked it around violently. Kind of strange. Those tigers are somewhat educated. A rainbow Blue Fox #2 also pulled in a couple.
