Birds from the South, and WAY South

Postby TEX-O-BOB » Mar 11, '10, 6:36

The Mearns Quail were taken right down on the Mexican border by my buddy Shane, and the Ocelated Turkeys were taken clear down in the Yucatan in Mexico.

I have now officially mounted at least one of every species of quail that you can get in the lower 48. This Mearns pair marks the last of all six. :D

This species of turkeys unique only to South America are beardless. What they lack in beards they more than make up for in huge needle sharp 2 1/2 inch spurs. These two jakes aren't the best representatives of the species. The mature male is much more fully plumed and brilliantly colored. These little guys turned out OK, but I can't wait to get my hands on a mature tom.

Nice TEX... neat looking birds.

My parents live in New Mexico, about twenty miles from the border. They tell me those quail are running around their yard and all around the area. I hope to get a few when I visit..
...against the western sky there were mountains, blue and distant mountains. I must pass through them. I must see what lies beyond.
