The batteries in those tracking collars the DWR uses last 2-3 years before they need to be replaced, depending on their set signal rate. They are sealed batteries so they have to be sent back to the manufacturer to be refurbished. The cost to replace the battery and refurbish the collar approaches that of a new collar (@ $300) so more often than not they are just junked after removal. Occasionally the battery dies while still attached or the collar malfunctions making it impossible for the DWR to track the animal to replace the collar. In those cases, unless the animal slips the collar or the DWR stumbles on them when they have the equipment to make an exchange, the critter has bling for life.
